Rising Dampness is caused by the capillary movement of water rising through your property’s structure.
The Preservation Company is an award-winning contractor offering treatments designed to alleviate the damage caused by Rising Dampness from the inside out, keeping your property dry, safe and healthy.
What is Rising Dampness and how does it occur?
Rising dampness can occur when there is a non-physical DPC or bridging of an existing DPC which allows groundwater to rise up.
Rising from the ground
The term ‘rising dampness’ refers to moisture that rises up from the ground and into a building’s walls. When this moisture enters the walls, it can cause a range of problems, from staining and damp patches on walls to decorative, plaster and joinery deterioration.
What causes it
Rising dampness can be caused by a range of factors and is a common problem in older buildings. Often older properties have no incorporated DPC and existing DPC can become compromised by for example raised pavement levels and internal bridging.
It is important to act quickly
If rising dampness is already present in a property, then it is important to act quickly and ensure any existing Damp-Proof Course (DPC) is identified. If there is no existing DPC in place, there is a range of treatments available to help tackle the problem, including chemical damp-proofing, cavity drainage membrane systems and air-gap treatments.
How do I identify Rising Dampness
Sight
Common signs are the presence of peeling paint and wallpaper, as the moisture will cause the paint to bubble and flake, and the wallpaper to blister and peel. You may also notice a discolouration of the plaster which has become noticeably darker.
Touch
When you touch a surface that is affected by rising dampness, it will feel damp to the touch and, in some cases, may even feel cold.
Smell
Similar to other dampness issues you may notice a strong musty or stale smell in the air.
What does Rising Dampness look like?
There are a few tell-tale signs you can look for. One of the most common signs is a damp, musty smell in the room or area affected by the dampness. You may also notice peeling wallpaper, rising staining or tidemark and a white, powdery, or chalky substance on surfaces or walls.
