What is Basement Waterproofing and what is involved?

Basement Waterproofing and Tanking is an essential task for homeowners looking to protect their property from water ingress and dampness. It forms an important aspect of home maintenance that can help prevent costly water damage and keep your home safe and dry.

It keeps your home dry and structure sound

Water damage can promote mould growth and weaken the foundations of your property. Professional management ensures that the basement is properly sealed whilst managing the water flow around your structure. Providing a good drainage system for any water that does manage to enter the basement is important.

We follow British Standard 8102

British Standard 8102 (BS 8102) is a code of practice which provides guidance on the design and construction of below-ground structures. The standard sets out recommendations for the waterproofing of basements and provides guidance on the selection of appropriate waterproofing systems. It defines three types: Type A (barrier or tanking), Type B (structurally integral protection) and Type C (drained cavity). Our CSSW-qualified surveyors specify the right type, or combination, for your structure.

A comprehensive solution

A combination of strategies, including proper ground levels, drains or exterior waterproofing will ensure your under-ground structure provides long-term integrity. Our professional service assesses your specific situation and recommends the best solutions for your needs.

How we apply Basement Waterproofing

As members of the Property Care Association (PCA) and holders of the industry-recognised CSSW (Certified Surveyor of Structural Waterproofing) and SWD status, we can provide advanced Basement Waterproofing solutions.

When making a recommendation and considering all available techniques, we will propose an installation with either an advanced air gap membrane system or cementitious slurry, which may involve a bituminous Type A or C system or possibly a combination of both.

1. Identify potential sources of water

We will ground levels and external drainage around your home, as well as any plumbing or drainage issues that could contribute to water intrusion.

2. Install a waterproofing system

This could include an external waterproofing membrane and drainage, or an internal cavity drain membrane system with a perimeter channel, sump and pump. Which we recommend depends on your property and how it is used.
